This photo was taken in the castle at Neuschwanstein, one of the Nazi repositories for looted art. It shows just how varied the stolen artworks were – there’s Medieval polychrome sculptures, Chinese vases, a ship model, altar panels, stone carvings, Italian maiolica, Venetian glass… there’s even an ancient Egyptian bronze figure of the god Horus as a hawk!
Definitely not just paintings!
It is estimated that somewhere around 650,000 artworks were either looted directly or sold under duress by Jews and other persecuted minorities. Although hundreds of thousands were recovered and returned after the war, there are many, many precious objects that remain missing.
